The Lord wants us his followers to live productive, fulfilling, joy-filled lives. That is what we see in john 15 – a main characteristic of a growing disciple.
1. A Disciple Stays Close to Christ
Jesus tells us to remain in him.
“Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can't bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-5
We can’t leave with out the Lord. Another way abide signifies a solidity of position. It means that we sink our roots deep into our relationship with Jesus. allowing Him to fill every part of our life and daily activities. If we maintain this unbroken fellowship with God, a changed lifestyle will result.
2. A Disciple is Fruitful
Just as a branch can only be fruitful when attached to the vine, we can only be productive when draw our strength from Jesus.
“If a man doesn't remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned John 15:6
“You didn't choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” John 15:16
The word of God describe the fruit Jesus is taking about as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentlness, and self-control.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.” Galatians 5:22-24
3. A Disciple Obeys the Master Another good and clear sign that we are still connected with the source is our obedience to the word of our Lord. The principles and guidelines found in his word. Then only we will have what the Lord says is ours and discover what it means to live in God's love.
"If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and remain in his love. I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full." John 15:10-11
4. A Disciple Loves Others
A Disciple of the Lord is a servant of love. He serve others with humbleness not act as a boss. Jesus gave us the ultimate example of love by laying down his life for us. He, in essence, is asking us to do nothing less but, the same thing as he did for us. That mean placing someone else's needs before our own.
